Easy Sweet & Salty Breakfast French Toast

The other morning my husband and I were at a diner, and all I really wanted was this little breakfast that I made on a whim years ago. 

Kind of like french toast filled with ham and cheese, sprinkled with powdered sugar and topped with maple syrup-sweet & salty at it’s best. It’s so easy too. I made this up one morning when foraging for some food in my kitchen, and when I shared it on the Just A Pinch recipe site, it earned me a JAP Blue Ribbon along with almost 700 shares on social media and almost 1,800 “pinches,” or saves on the site. 

Sometimes the simplest things are best. 

Easy Sweet & Salty Breakfast
  1. 8 slices bread, any kind
  2. 4 slice deli ham
  3. 4 slice American cheese
  4. 4 eggs
  5. 4 Tbsp milk
  6. 4 tsp butter
  7. 4 Tbsp powdered sugar
  8. 1/4 c maple syrup
  1. 1. Preheat a griddle or skillet to 350 degrees. Place each piece of ham and cheese inside 2 pieces of bread, making 4 sandwiches.
  2. 2. In a medium bowl, beat eggs and milk. Spray the heated cooking surface with nonstick cooking spray and then place butter evenly over cooking surface to melt.
  3. 3. Dip each sandwich into egg mixture, coating on both sides, and place each on top of melted butter.
  4. 4. Grill on both sides, flipping, after golden brown. Serve with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and warm maple syrup. I eat mine without sugar & syrup sometimes too.
